Will it make your boat row faster?

It’s the end of January. Do you still remember your New Years resolutions? I’ve been at the gym 3-4 times a week and I’ve gotten amazing results in my yoga practice in just 3 short weeks. Shoulder stand with titanium screws in my back? I did it!!! Another limiting “i can’t do this” shattered. Yay! Practicing regularly definitely pushed the blues aside. Apparently, January is the most depressing month of the year. Really? How did you beet the blues?(couldn’t help it) I had a big craving for beets and red cabbage lately, so I’ve been juicing them almost every day. I’m actually sipping from one as I write now. The truth is, you gotta listen to your body when it tells you what it needs. Because it’s wiser than you. You just need to tune in with it. You’ll find a juicy recipe below.

Last night I was at Yes Group London, bringing raw cakes and green smoothies as I do every month, and as I was preparing to talk a penny dropped and it hit me. Every day we make at least 3 life-changing decisions. At least. 

Isn’t that daunting when you think of it? But so true. What you put into your body with each meal adds up. The responsibility of our actions weights more all of a sudden. Because you can use this opportunity as an empowering one, or keep adding to an ever-growing overdraft that will start collecting when you least expect it.

Take it as common sense and ask yourself every time you have to make a decision, as rowing Olympic Ben Hunt-Davis puts it: “Will it make the boat row faster?” Yes or No. It is as simple as that. Will it nourish you? Will you slow down? Will it get you sick? Or will it energise you? Etcetera, you see where I’m going with this.

So, I challenge you for the rest of the week to ask yourself when you go out for drinks, when you eat, when you shop for food or want to skip a workout – will it make your boat go faster or not? Decide what’s your boat and give it a row…I mean, go.

beetroot-cabbage-carrot-juice-second-nature

A juice to pump the beets and turnip the volume
Makes 2

  • 1/2 beetroot
  • 1/4 red cabbage
  • 3 tangerines/1 orange
  • 2 carrot
  • 4 stalks kale
  • 1 knob ginger
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled

Wash and juice.

Or if you’re like me and like to blend and strain, squeeze the tangerines/orange in a blender first then add the chopped carrots and blend. At this point, depending on your blender you could add the rest of ingredients and use the tamper(if your blender has one) or a little bit of water and the ingredients to help it blend. Give it a whiz and then strain with a nut milk bag/cloth in a jug or bowl. Et voila! Enjoy!
