10 plant based days in Barcelona

barcelona

I am one of those lucky ones that have family in a sunny country. My parents live in Barcelona and every few months I have a blood line excuse to book a trip to Spain. I love them to bits!

This holiday one of my goals was to introduce my family to green smoothies. My parents are feeling the effects of too much acid and inflammation in their bodies and I’m trying to find a way to open the wonderful world of blending and juicing to them.

They have an Eastern European meets Mediterranean diet and I’m happy to see that at least they are open to small changes. Green salads are present next to every meal! Yay!

First, I tried introducing them to my morning tonic.  My mom and sister are sold. My dad didn’t try yet.

I use a one inch turmeric root, one inch ginger root, 4-6 black peppercorns, half a peeled lemon and 1/2 spoon spirulina. All blended with at least 500ml/2 cups water. Strain or not, whichever you prefer.

Having this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will alkalise and repair your system after a good nights sleep.

It will also give you a kick start to your day.

Having it myself everyday while in Barcelona was very helpful! It was followed either by a big green salad with avocado and sprouts on top or a green smoothie.

Since it was Easter time we had a lot of food preparations going on. We are Eastern Europeans after all! So, I brought the veg side to a very meat oriented menu.

I tried replicating a traditional Easter Cheesecake (pască) into a raw cheesecake. It was surprisingly similar in taste, but without all the egg, cheese, sugar!  My sister gave it the thumbs up for being better than my moms (mom, i hope you’re not reading this! )

I also made a veg loaf in the oven. This is usually made with all the internal organs from the lamb. I’m so happy that my family joined me in skipping at least this dish on this occasion.

I respect everyone’s choices and I am ok with having non-plant based foods around me, but knowing all the effects it has on the human body I am happy to see my family replacing here and there a meal with a veg counterpart.

The custom is to knock 2 hard boiled painted eggs with a specific saying. Because I enjoy the time spent with my family this year I decided to please my folks and have one of the eggs. This brings my yearly egg intake to 1.

I might raise a few vegan eyebrows here, but I am a believer in moderation and social participation. And there’s a time for everything.

In all fairness it was weird! I knew I was eating chicken period, however,  in that context I enjoyed being in the moment with my family. Nothing comes above that.

On the bright side, I went back to the most amazing vegan ice cream in Barcelona. It was so good that it deserves a post on its own.
