There’s a cow in the room. Can you see it?

The other day I went to TedX Hackney “The Future of Food” and it only reinforced the necessity of us being the change. Here’s what I learned…

Did you know that 30-50% of food from the supply chain never makes it on the table? We are producing food for 9 billion people, yet 1 billion people on the planet go to sleep every night starving. What can you do? Ask the supermarkets to sell ugly vegetables as well, buy from farmers markets, use the ends and trims for veggie stock by freezing them and using when needed.

Did you know that the UK soil has about 100 harvests left until it’s completely depleted? What can you do? By using crop rotation and permaculture the soil can be replenished and reactivated. Ask the farmers at the farmers market what type of agriculture they practice, inform yourself and start discussions.

Did you know that every cup of tea that we don’t drink used 27 liters of water to be produced? What can you do? I always get upset when I make tea for someone and it’s thrown away. I’m that person who brews a cup 2-3 times! Next time you don’t finish your tea, think about the figures – 27 liters of water could give you a brisk 3 minute shower.

This is one for those who make nut milk – did you know that every almond takes 4 liters of water to grow?! When I found about that a while ago I stopped making almond milk or getting almonds from California (where most almonds come from and the area is going through severe droughts) and look for local ones. Just replace them with a better source or use with consideration.

Lastly but not least, did you know that it takes 2000 liters of water, 6kg of cattle feed and 2kg of CO2 emissions to produce ONE burger?

There’s a cow in the room and no one wants to talk about it. 18% carbon dioxide emissions come from live stock. That’s more than airplanes, cars, factories and cities put together. We live in the desert of the real. We are fundamentally disconnected from the landscapes that provide our food. The greatest illusion in this world is the illusion of separation. We are in denial and don’t want to see what’s going on. But we can still do something about it. We can educate ourselves, we can do our research, we can make a small change every day. Actually, every day we make at least 3 life changing and environmentally affecting decisions.

No one is perfect. I’m far from it. But I believe we can have a positive effect onto the world and do our bit step by step, every single day.

Until next time, keep being aware!

Much love,
Denisa xxo
